Introducing DataDefender by Cloud Storage Security

Blog post featured image

Award-winning cloud security solution provider Cloud Storage Security (CSS)  has announced the general release of DataDefender, a security platform built to help organizations secure their most important assets– their data. Having built the award-winning malware protection solution Antivirus for Amazon S3, currently the #1 most subscribed container listing in AWS Marketplace, DataDefender is the result of CSS’ expertise in cloud security, especially pertaining to the storage layer, and the desire to help customers prevent data breaches at all costs.

DataDefender, along with all of CSS’ solutions, are built on three key tenants:

  • Enterprise Scalability: Similar to their malware scanning solution, which can support thousands of accounts and petabytes of data with ease, DataDefender is built to inventory, manage the configuration of, monitor, and protect tens of thousands of buckets and resources across thousands of accounts.
  • Ease of Deployment: As an agentless solution, deployment requires minimal tinkering and can be performed in under 1 hour, start-to-finish.
  • Ease of Use: While maintaining the functionality to address even the most complex and niche of customer use cases, DataDefender is simple to use and is most importantly functional immediately after deployment.

Functionality, Value, and Use Cases

DataDefender’s functionality can be split into four main “pillars”, each of which tied together to provide value to customers as a part of a single, unified solution:

  • Inventory: The first problem organizations have is that data is distributed; across accounts, resources, and composition, including sensitivity. The inventory function answers the question “Where’s my data?”
      • Inventories data over object, file, and block resources
      • Summarizes file composition, file sensitivity, access patterns and more
      • Monitors overall storage usage and posture
  • Security Checks: Across hundreds or even thousands of buckets, file systems, and more, it becomes difficult to manage dozens of configuration options where even a single misconfiguration could result in a data breach. The security checks function answers the question “Is my data locked down?”
      • 90+ security-oriented best practice checks surface misconfigurations such as publicly accessible resources
      • Detailed reports, organized by severity, make it simple to locate misconfigured resources and remediate misconfigurations, if necessary
  • Malware Protection: Over petabytes of data, organizations need to ensure that the files stored in the cloud do not contain malware and could risk detonation if executed by a downstream customer, employee, or partner. The malware scanning function answers the question “Is my data clean?”
      • In-tenant malware scanning validates the security of data in place; it is not accessed, moved, or copied by CSS or its solutions
      • 3 engines provide 99.999% accuracy, virtually eliminating false positives and false negatives
  • Activity Monitoring: Given the large amount of data modern organizations store in the cloud, and the thousands of events going on within a given cloud accounting per day, it can become difficult, if not impossible, to manage who is accessing what when it comes to storage and the data within. The activity monitoring function is designed to answer the question “Who’s accessing my data?”
      • Enables simple investigation of storage logs such as CloudTrail and Server Access Logs to identify data exfiltration attempts
      • Monitors changes made to storage resources that could indicate ransomware attacks, insider threats, and more

At the core of DataDefender’s design philosophy is the multi-layered protection of the storage layer in the cloud, giving organizations the ability to operate safely and securely without the threat of data breaches, compliance violations, reputational loss, and other consequences of cyberattacks.

If your organization is interested in trying out DataDefender, the solution is available for deployment and use in a private beta as of today, June 30, 2025. Simply submit your request in the following form and our product team will set up a time to deploy as soon as you’re available.
